5th International Conference on

Intercultural Communication Competence - ICCC5

Global Learning: Educating the World Citizen

Conception of Global Reach-based Global Learning. Global reach is the facilitation of interactions between learners from distant, contrasting cultures through the use of modern communication technologies. The goal of Global Learning is the cultivation of multiple perspectives as a result of these (global reach) interactions. The challenge of Global Learning is that the learners must collaborate using communication technology tools rather than face-to-face interactions while living within their respective home culture.

ICCC and Global Learning for Educating the World Citizen. The process of improving intercultural communication competence is an integral part of the global learning experience. An expected outcome of the global reach-based global learning is an increased level of intercultural communication competence. Fostering multiple perspectives and increasing the level of ICCC are two essential attributes of a world citizen.

The ICCC5 conference will focus on the following THEMES:

Global Learning: Theoretical Frameworks and Models

  1. Theoretical Frameworks: What theories inform the genesis and evolution of global learning?
  2. New Theories: Does global learning provide emerging challenges for which innovative theories are needed?
  3. GL Models: How have global learning opportunities been provided in a range of discipline areas, (e.g. mechanical engineering, mathematics education, music, political science, women’s studies)?
  4. Lessons Learned: What has been learned from global learning opportunities that will benefit future implementations?

Interplay of Intercultural Communication Competence and Global Learning

  1. Intercultural Capital: How are current theoretical frameworks for Intercultural Communication Competence (ICCC) changing in order to capture intercultural capital development in global learning environments (e.g. critical social, pedagogical and multiculturalism theories; transformative learning theory)?
  2. Dimensions of ICCC: What attributes/factors/dimensions of ICCC contribute the most to effective global learning?
  3. Diversity: How is improving intercultural communication competence contributing to understanding/valuing/nurturing diversity and multiculturalism, both locally and globally?
  4. Bricolage: How do the various disciplines contribute (e.g. psychology, information technology) to understanding of ICCC and GL?
  5. Our World View: How global learning experiences contribute to and shape our perspectives of diversity, multiculturalism and ICCC?

Curriculum Models: Integration of Global Learning

  1. Curriculum Considerations:  What constitutes global learning curriculum (e.g. content, pedagogy, outcomes, processes, strategies, context)?
  2. Curriculum Integration:  How can global learning be successfully integrated into existing curriculum in various academic disciplines (e.g. business, education, engineering, health sciences, law, biology, art, music)?
  3. Learning Outcomes: What benefits for the learner and the educator are derived from the integration of global learning into curriculum?
  4. Assessment Practices: How can global learning outcomes be appropriately assessed in conjunction with content learning outcomes?
  5. Attributes, Processes and Dispositions: How are various attributes, processes and dispositions developed within the context of global learning (e.g. global awareness, collaboration, intercultural communication competency, critical thinking, reflection, metacognition, communication technology skills, multiple perspectives, ethical decision making)?
  6. Diversity: How does the acquisition through global learning of these attributes, processes and dispositions contribute to the education of a world citizen? How does the use of global learning curriculum help schools to educate students for future productive lives in a multicultural society and globalized world?

Note: Proposals on other, related topics will also be considered.

Selected papers from the conference will be published in the upcoming book with MacMillan:
