Now there's Chinese language for the public too

Posted 4:14PM - Monday, August 7, 2006

Location :KU Confucius Institute in Overland Park

Given your interest in China, I thought you would appreciate knowing that the Confucius Institute (http://www.confucius.ku.edu) will be offering Mandarin classes for the public beginning this fall. These practical and enjoyable courses will be held at convenient times for working professionals, families, and retirees over a 10-week period at KU’s Edwards Campus in Overland Park and also in Lawrence. As Time Magazine has said, "If you want to get ahead, learn Mandarin" (June 19, 2006).
Mandarin is the standard and most widely spoken dialect of the Chinese language, and so is essential for Americans interested in doing business, vacationing, or studying in China. Additionally, as Chinese businesses, scholars, and tourists travel to the United States in growing numbers, many Americans are finding Mandarin increasingly useful here.
Please find below details about specific classes or see: http://www.confucius.ku.edu/language_classes.shtml.
Conversational Mandarin for Professionals I
(Donut Chinese!)
Section 1: 7:00am to 7:45am Tuesdays, Sept. 12 - Nov.14
Section 2: 7:00am to 7:45am Thursdays, Sept. 14 - Nov.16
Confucius Institute Seminar Room, Regents Center Library, KU Edwards Campus
Fee: $125.00 (Includes textbooks, study materials and refreshments)
This course is designed for professionals without previous training in Mandarin who need basic Chinese language skills while maintaining a busy schedule. Stop by our class on the way to work for 45 minutes of Chinese, with coffee and bagel or donut to keep you going. If your business schedule requires you to be out of town on the day your section meets, you may attend the other section at no extra charge.
The essentials of communication will be covered with emphasis on the spoken language and practical phrases needed by anyone traveling or doing business in China. Learn how to say hello, introduce yourself, and even say a few words about your company. By the end of this course, you will be able to hold a simple conversation with a professional counterpart in Chinese. Course materials are written in pinyin, the official Romanized (Latin alphabet) spelling system used in China. Chinese characters also are introduced, a definite advantage in reading signs on your next trip to China.
