Projects - 2006
Cage Painting Simulation
A great deal of progress has been made during 2005/6 with the development and testing of a prototype simulation with more than 100 participants in some global learning projects as well as with masters and doctoral students on the Fairmount campus and at sites in Derby and North High School. Results of the project have been reported at international conferences in the United States, Austria, Khabarovsk (Far East Russia), and the UK and was the subject of a Keynote address at the International Intercultural Communication Conference. In partnership with NexLearn, using their SimWriter software, a new version of CPS has been developed that is modular to facilitate the development of a global online scenario repository.
MoreSenior Design Class in Mechanical Engineering
During 2005/6 two ME 662 senior design classes have learned about intercultural communication and the application of cage painting to its improvement. During the spring 2006 semester a team of students at WSU worked on a project that was sponsored by Progresstech and the Moscow Boeing Design Center, while a team from the Moscow Aviation Technology Institute worked on a project sponsored by Spirit Aerosystems in Wichita. During each project, students had the additional challenge of communicating between cultures to negotiate design parameters for the projects. Plans are underway to increase the number of opportunities for projects in the Fall and to have a joint WSU/MATI team work on a project sponsored by a company in a third country, possibly the UK or India. By 2007, this project will expand to include sister classes in India, the UK and possibly Australia.
MorePost-War Peace Building
During 2005/6, Dr Carolyn Shaw, the project leader, worked with Roni Linser CEO of Fablusi, an online role play specialist company based in Melbourne, Australia and Dr David Mendeloff at Carleton University, Ottawa, to provide a role play simulation for political science students at WSU and Carleton. This enriched the experience of students at both universities. Over the summer, Dr Shaw’s development team has made many enhancements to the online simulation ready for the next class in the Fall.
